Beating a Dead Horse

Murphy has decided to rear his ugly head: We were all set to go to the children’s museum yesterday morning with a group of our friends, when SD said he didn’t want to go.  And, he actually got a little teary.  As his allergies have been horrible the last few days with a snotty, drippy nose, I didn’t push it.  I’m not driving 45 minutes into Dallas to have him act up.

My ”momdar” (that ability we all gain when we push watermelons out our hoohoos), certainly took note of the odd in my kiddo and watched for other signs.  I noticed he dug at his ear later.  Hmmm…not good.  Then, when I went to see why he was taking such a long nap (again…hmmmmm….not normal), I found him looking a bit foggy.  I felt him & he was burning up.   JOY!

I managed to get him into the pediatrician.  Yup.  Double ear infections.  Did he once complain?  Nope.  Just the clues left for momdar to pick up on.  We got mega-antibiotics, and will get to go back on Friday.  If his ears aren’t very clear, he gets a big ol’ shot.

Then, last night while watching a truly amazing How I Met Your Mother, I started feeling a bit funky.  Before bed, I ended up taking two Benadryl to help me sleep (still woefully behind from last week).  I woke up with a stuffy nose, itchy throat, and popping ears.  I have been going downhill steadily this afternoon and finally got around to making an appointment for myself.

If it is, in fact the 8th sinus infection in the last year, I wonder if I get to get that nose job?  Uncle Doctor said whenever I was ready.  Am I ready?  I dunno.

Oh, thank you Murphy!  You sure do know how to kick a girl when she’s down.  It’s like you know we leave for vacation on Saturday.

  • Man, you Momdar is GOOD. It takes me forever to realize when mine is genuinely sick. It would help if she would complain, but no, I have to use Momdar.

I hope you’re feeling better soon. Even considering the nose job is a pretty good sign that you feel like crap.

  • Oh, no! I hope you’re both feeling hunky-dory for the trip and nobody is battling aches and fever. Darn that Murphy!

  • I hope you’re both feeling better soon.
You know..I want a nose job, but for completely vain reasons. :)

  • Yep, the Momdar is never wrong! I hope you’re all better by this weekend. Maybe just getting out of North Texas will help you breathe easier. I swear, this allergy season has been the worst!

  • Sounds like chronic sinusitis…they can give you meds for that. I hope you feel better soon!

  • Oh no…feel better fast!

  • Seems like everyone has the crud. Though my dd’s school INSISTED she had pink-eye. I knew she didn’t but took her to the doc anyway. Hmmm…maybe I should have made her teacher pay the co-pay since I was totally right. Blech. Hope you guys are on the mend soon.

  • Bummer! Hope you both get to feeling better soon. Are you flying? Nothing like a plane ride with ear/sinus infections.

  • Poor old you. Just let me know if I should kick Murphy’s butt. I hope you feel better.

  • nooooooooooooooo! not you too!!!!!!

  • Poor AFF and SD , hope you are both on the mend today

  • I can’t think of anything worse than taking care of a sick toddler while you yourself are sick.

And my sister just got her “nose job” - her septum was so deviated, it was under her left eye socket. She only had 5% airflow on the left side and only 20% on the right. She suffered from almost constant sinus infections. Eventually antibiotics stopped working and they worried she’d have permanent damage if something wasn’t done. Those infections can go into your brain. She also had some polyps removed. She had the surgery April 2 and now has more than 90% airflow on both sides and is still healing. She says it was the best thing she ever did in her life, and was only “out of commission” for about a week or so.

So it may be worth it for you. If you want to talk to her about it, I can give you her email!

  • Ugh. Sorry you’re both sick. Being sick AND having to take care of a sick kid is not fun.

    Feel better soon!!

  • Ugh. Just ugh.

My fingers are crossed that you all get the meds you need and they start working well and quickly so the vaca isn’t ruined!

    Thank goodness for momdar!

  • Oh no. I hope you both feel much better before the weekend.

  • I hope you are both feeling better this morning. The illness really sucks and the timing sucks even worse. Give SD a hug from me.

I’ll give you my own hug on Saturday!!!! Can’t wait!

  • oh no poor you and SD, hope the antibiotics are kicking in and you both feel better today.
I’m also enjoying my 2nd ever sinus infection - is this an American thing??

  • Ohhh….I hope it’s just allergies and not another infection! Poor SD, hope those antibiotics knock out that infection pronto! Get well!

  • Momdar is the best. I only wish the dad’s could have Momdar too.

Surgery: Since obviously I know everything from going through it 2 years ago (insert sarcasm here). It suck big time and will kick your butt- BUT I have not had one sinus infection this year and I used to be like you. That’s all I’m gonna say……..

  • I actually LOL at the part where you defined how we get momdar. Yes I have it too. I actually have had it a long time. Before kids.
Good job using yours. I hope you ALL feel better quickly. In time for your vacay!

  • oh… and TAG, you’re it….

  • Oh so sorry! I hate when we are dealing with sickness when the weather is turning all summery here. Seems especially unfair.

  • I’ve never had a sinus infection (that I know of) but hubby has been suffering terribly this spring and has taken to using a netti pot, which seems to help.
    Don’t mess with the Momdar!

  • I say we hog-tie Murphey and slap the snot out of him.

We’ve had sinus draining down the back of our throats causing us to hack our heads off. You would think I would have rock solid abs by now - instead I’ve had to buy absorbent material that makes me feel old.

    Curse you Aquascum!

  • Hope you guys feel better soon.

Your momdar is spot on. WTG!

  • Nice catch!

So the question is, since he’s sick as well, will you catch a break and get a rest a bit? Or will the sickness not slow him down at all now that he’s got the meds.

  • Wow! That is a beating!

Hope the Fanatic Household gets better soon.

  • Ouch! Sick mom and baby, that is bad. Feel better.

  • That was always the big tipoff for Annie - pulling at the ears. She knew.

  • I’m so sorry you guys are sick. I hope you both feel better soon (and that your husband doesn’t get it b/c men are complete whiners when they are sick!)

  • I haven’t visited in awhile but I have to say now that I am all caught up, you are very, very funny even when you are sick.

  • Oh geez, poor G and you both! I certainly wouldn’t have picked on that immediately.

Make sure Pup babies you both!

  • Wow another sinus infection! Ouch! And baby has ear infections too. You guys need to lay in bed and watch movies all day. :)

  • Yuck! That sucks!!! I hope they can give you some good meds that have you feeling better in no time!

Maybe that surgery is a good idea. Scary, but good.

  • Murphy is such a dick. He likes to hang out at my place, too. Except here he breaks shit.

Hope you feel better soon. :)

  • I want a nose job. How many nose infections do I have to get before this is an option?

  • Man, your momdar is good. So sorry to hear about all the infections. I hope you’re all on the mend by the weekend!

  • I hope both of you feel better soon! At least you’re sick BEFORE your vacay right?

  • Julie used to be queen of the ear infections when she was a baby, too! You have my absolute sympathy and I’ll keep everyone in my prayers for this weekend.

  • Sending positive vibes your way that you don’t get sick! And that SD gets well soon!

The last ear infection Punkin had she didn’t complain either, but the last time I had one (about six months ago), I thought I was gonna DIE! Ag-o-neee!

  • You have amazing momdar. I take forever to notice ear infections! And as for you, you need that operation. Although I noticed something the last couple of years, when anyone around me has a cold and I take Benadryl (which I often take thanks to my severe allergies), I get a sinus infection. If I lay off the Benadryl (and take something with a decongestant) the second anyone around me sniffles, I get the cold but no sinus infection. I have no idea why it works, but it does.

  • Awe . . . thank goodness for the Momdar. I finally get what that is all about.

Here’s to the both of you feelin’ better. Then again, I so get the need for a good “sinus” surgery. :)

  • Awe. Geesh. Hopefully everything gets better soon.

    ((hugs))

  • Girl I feel your pain! I just recovered from a nasty 48 hour virus and temps of 101… I do NOT envy you being sick. I’m still feeling out of it….

Poor SD!! DOUBLE infections? :( What a great kid not to be complaining…you both need some serious R&R!

  • Poor your house! I am sorry you all are sick!! Maybe it’s a good thing, you’ll both be sparkling and ready to go on saturday…

Happy Anniversary too- that was a suhweet post.

  • Ouch. Glad you found out BEFORE you went. We went on Monday and it was soooo crowded. It would have been miserable with a grumpy kid.
