Back in Black…erm…Brown

As a child I remember watching my mom wear those horrible do-it-yourself caps where you’d get a knitting needle and grab tiny whisps of hair to do highlights.  I loved my hair.  I vowed to her never would I consider altering the dirty blonde the Lord gave me.  Why would I want to?  It just created a dependency on having to do it all over again in a short amount of time.  And, boy howdy!  It looked mighty damn painful to squelch your head into that cap (looked like my butt when it gets squelched into a pair of Spanx) only to have to get a needle to yank.

Then something drastic took place to make me choke on my crow: puberty.  I went from naturally highlighted looking hair (lots of shades of blonde and light brown) to solidly mousy brown.  And, not a pretty mousy brown.  I’m seriously fair skinned.  And, by fair, I mean when I hit the Clinique counter & ask for fair, the fair is a little bit tanner than my skin.  Dark brown against white?  Not so ‘ttractive.  So, I began my love affair with Toni & Guy.

My spouse, prior to today had never seen me with solidly brown hair.  Sure, as the years have gone by, he’s seen his share of root action, but when my parents were paying, I got my hair done quite frequently. (Daddy’s little girl was/is quite spoiled :) ) Then, when we got married and I had my own salary, I slowed down a bit, but I still made sure to keep my hair up as often as I could.  Then, literally, after bedrest hit, I think I might’ve gone almost six months.  After the birth of the baby, I still got them done, although I started adding in low lights to make them last a little longer.

In the past few months I kept saying I just didn’t know if it was worth it any longer.  My mother, being my mother, assured me how awful I look brown & how my coloring is just not right for pulling off a brunette look.  But, this morning, I just said enough.  Stick a fork in me.  I’m well done.

Well, my darlings, after 17 years of coloring my hair, I did it.  Today I went to the grocery, and with the help of the spousal unit, we perused the hair care aisle.  We looked at Nice N Easy shade 103.  We glanced at that stuff Sarah Jessica is promoting.  We ended up with something from Loreal.  And, after seventeen years of adding blondes and golden browns, I picked something just brown.

And, you know?  I kinda feel saucy.  Like I won’t take shit from anybody (like I did, but let’s go with it) or maybe I’ll go run a marathon…umm, this is me…walk a 2k.  I don’t know.  I walk by a mirror and have to touch it.  Is that really me?  It’s brown.  I’ll let you be the judge.  Can I pull the look off?

This is NOT fixed.  It’s just after I did the rough dry following the wash out.

  • I love it! Love the style on you too. I’m a big fan of natural hair; no matter the color, I think it tends to make people look younger. Saucy, indeed!

  • Oh yeah, you can pull it off. It looks great. I like the brown and you do look younger. Of course, you look so damn young anyway.

  • I love it! My oldest sister has been platinum blonde since the 60s. Yes, we are old. Anyway, when she was in her 30s, she decided it was too much trouble so she let it go. It grew in grey. She is still a platinum blonde!!

    Your hair looks perfect!

  • You look absolutely amazing.

  • You ‘rook mahverous!

  • I think it’s looks great and I’m not seeing a stark contrast between facial color and hair color. It looks pretty natural! Darhling…your gorgeous!

  • Sheesh, you had me thinking you did something dramatic. It looks JUST RIGHT. Perfect. Cute. Hot. Sexy.

    Rrrraaawwwrrr.

Hiya, Chicky with the light brown hair!

  • I think it looks perfect, it really suits you. I can’t believe you did it yourself very brave! Now what can you spend all that saved hairdresser money on!!!

  • The brown looks great. Like others have said it isn’t that huge of a difference.

The offer of the red and blue still stands….

  • You are HOTT. You so could you be the model for Aveda (or Toni and Guy of course). Our Moms were of the same variety I tell ya!

  • I think it looks great! Go you :)

  • It suits you well. It still looks v natural. I like it! When I did mine way back (I can tell you now) I went from blond to way dark - too dark and there were some almost blue tinges in it. But I loved going dark. Especially not having roots! You go girl!!!
Did the boy child say anything???

  • oooh, I love it! It looks fabulous.

  • Hubba hubba!!! You look fantastic! And you KNOW I wouldn’t just say that! Your mom doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

  • Sooo, just in case you were still in need people to tell you how gorgeous the hair is on you…..

    Yep. :) Looks MAHVelous! :)

  • I can reassure you that I’m a complete expert on Loreal brown hair dye. In fact you have reminded me I need to go and buy some, I am mortified to see a dreaded grey hair poking through. Not a good start to my week. Anyway, that aside, your hair looks amazing, and it suits your colouring. Don’t change it!

  • Oh yeah! I’m with the majority vote! My sister and I are both blonde… The type of blonde that used to go green in the holidays! :) Now that she has settled in England, her hair is mousy and she has to highlight! Mine still gets enough streaking from the sun….

  • You totally can pull off brown. Not just pull it off - You look GREAT!

  • I think you could pull off the no hair/no eyebrow look, with a skull tattoo on YOUR skull and STILL look cute and saucy.

    It looks great :)

  • I think it looks good!

  • Looks adorable on you. I love the cut.

  • I love it. Sometimes Moms get something in their heads and can’t let go. I think Mom needs to let go ’cause you look AWESOME. Saucy, indeed! (:

  • You look so cute! I fought the brown for a long time, gave up, and now I’m fighting it again - LOL.

You can totally pull it off, but isn’t it great to know that we women can change our minds at any time, and go blonde, or black or red, or blue, if we wanted. OK, maybe not blue…

  • You look great, I think! I’m going DARK this weekend, well I *think* I am. I really need a new look. Brown is the new blonde.

  • Love it! I did the same thing when I was first preggo with #1. Haven’t gone back since. The savings are huge (even if I did like the blonde)!

  • Brown looks great on you! And it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than getting it done at the salon! (I love home color kits.)

  • you look absolutely GORGEOUS!

  • You can totally rock the brown. I really like it. But I like dark hair anyway - I actually went darker myself this weekend (and I’m already dark brown).

    I think you look fabulous!

  • I LOVE IT!!! I think you look amazing!

  • Good for you, looks great! And I noticed the cut is different too– somewhere only a few posts back. You should have a saucy-makes-you-feel-powerful color and cut, it suits you. I quit fighting natural me back in November. I’m lovin’ seeing my real hair color now–even the gray bits.

You’d still look good after being dragged through a hedge backwards so don’t fret. Plus, it’s still multi-tonal which is an added bonus.

Oh, it feels so good to comment again!

  • I love it- so does Ben who happened to walk by just as a I scrolled down to the picture.
Check out my blog today- you might really like the story!

  • Hmm. I can’t see the picture… It’s probably my computer pms’ing on me again. I’m sure it’s lovely!

  • Looks great! My problem now is that I’ve gone almost a year without coloring and all this gray has appeared. Can’t wait for this baby to be born so I can be back at the hairdressers to get rid of it.

  • I think you look fabu!!! Who needs roots? Ask me that when grays start growing in. I might be in a different mood.

  • That’s not fixed? Wow - it looks fixed to me! And I love the color!

  • I think it looks terrific…but then I’m partial to dark…

    Hydes

  • Sounds like you and I have another thing in common! The same hair! I used to have mousy light brown hair too. It certain light it would look gray. Attractive on a 17 year old. So I started coloring my hair around that time too.
Do you know how hard it is to get just a pretty brown color? Every time I try it I end up with reddish undertones. I would love to have your color. It looks fabulous!!! You look gorgeous in brown! Hooray!

  • It looks great! Mom’s don’t know anything…

Except you. As far as your son is concerned, you know everything!

  • I think it’s a great shade on you! And kudos to you for doing it yourself. I remember dying mine “red” once and I have left it to the professionals ever since. Hair appts are usually my alone time, so I can’t give those up!

  • I think it’s the perfect shade for you. It looks great and still looks like it has some blonde in it.

Very well done. Much better than that time I a dark brunette tried to go blonde, eeek…

  • It looks great! I have that mousey brown (a little mousier I must admit) too but sadly I cannot pull it off so I see my hair dresser, often.

  • It looks awesome!
(I’m a natural blonde, and so far the grays are being hidden by the blonde, but I just don’t know where to go from there.)

  • You look great!

  • Holly, I think it looks beautiful!

    Very pretty!
I’ll second (third, fourth, fifth - ha!) that the cut is fabulous too!
I’m considering taking it to the hairdresser, and saying, “I want it just like this!” Would you be offended? Am I allowed? :-)

  • Yeah you can pull it off. :) I likey!

  • I really, really, really like it! It’s awesome and brunette’s do it better (calm down blondies, I’m only 1/2 kidding).

  • Whoa Hawt mama! I actually think it looks incredibly natural. Great job in choosing color and styling. I love the way it all looks! A ba-jillion years ago, when I still brushed my hair, I loved L’oreal hair color. It was the only brand that didn’t make my hair look ‘crispy.’

  • Geez, you are not THAT white! I think it looks really good.

Unfortunately my hair is no longer that light anymore either. Dammit!

  • Hottie!! Love the look. You aren’t that white. Matter of fact you look tan compared to me.

  • If that’s your not fixed rough dry, I’m jealous. You’re lookin’ good and pullin’ it off with style and flair. I think it suits you well.

I should have put you in charge of my hair. It’s now officially glaringly ruined.

  • actually i think its tons better. believe me, i know the brown/fair delimma. but you have nice skin, so you can pull it off. woohoo!

  • You look marvelous!

  • You AND your hair look fabulous. Yum! oops. I mean, GREAT. Lovely. Del.lic.i.ous.

Do you get the feeling here?

  • Cute! And not at all the color of pee. You lucky, lucky girl.

  • It looks good on you, who said mom knows best! I need to cover some gray, but everything I try turns my hair red. Maybe I should just go brown.

  • I love it! Although as someone with dark brown hair, that still looks pretty light to me. :)

I think you did a great job picking the color. It looks great with your skin!

  • Dude!!!! I LOVE it!!! You can 100% pull that off! You look great!

  • Well don’t you look darling!!! The color looks very good and very natural. Which is a tough thing to pull off. I say great job!

  • I love the new color! It suits your coloring beautifully, and the bolder tone suits your bold personality.

    Double thumbs up!

  • cute as a blond or brunette but not too tough :)

  • [...] pair of Spanx to squlech into? (Two, but shh, okay?)  Well, you all know I recently dyed my hair back brown…and I’m still not 100% sold on it.  So, in addition to having questionable hair [...]
